Large Thomas Insulator
Couldn't load pickup availability
This is a multi-part, brown glazed porcelain pin-type Thomas insulator, which was historically used on overhead utility poles to prevent high-voltage electrical current from leaking into the wooden crossarms. Measuring 7 by 11 inches, this large-scale piece features a multi-tiered, skirted design specifically engineered to shed rainwater and maintain an electrical dry path under severe weather conditions. The deep chocolate-brown glaze is highly characteristic of industrial electrical ceramics manufactured in the early-to-mid 20th century. Today, these heavy-duty multi-skirt insulators are actively collected for their industrial history, sculptural aesthetic, or repurposed as unique rustic home decor and conversation pieces. This item has a significant chip, see photos.
