Antique French Basket
Couldn't load pickup availability
This is an antique French hand-coiled rye basket, also known as a palissou or bourgne. Originating from rural regions like the Loire Valley, these sturdy vessels were traditionally crafted from bundles of rye straw or rush bound with narrow strips of bramble or willow. Its deep, cylindrical shape and heavy, dense weave made it ideal for agricultural tasks such as bread proofing, grain storage, or gathering produce. The dark, weathered patina and uneven texture are hallmarks of authentic 19th-century French farmhouse utility, reflecting a time when such baskets were essential, locally-made tools for everyday survival.
11.5" x 19", Note included from estate sale: "This antique basket is from France - it was made for bicyclists to contain groceries, etc. Purchased in Paris 1987."
