This antique cast iron fireplace coal basket is a quintessential Victorian-era hearth accessory designed for burning solid fuels like coal or small logs. Characterized by its sturdy, heavy-duty construction, the basket features a prominent fleur-de-lis motif cast into the integral fireback, which served both as a decorative element and a functional surface to reflect heat into the room.
The piece is designed as a footed insert, standing on four short, tapered legs to allow for proper airflow beneath the fuel source. Its structure includes slatted or barred sides that keep the fuel contained while letting ash fall through to the hearth floor for easy cleanup. Many of these original 19th-century pieces, often marked with specific casting numbers like 1505 on the rear or side panels, have attained a naturally aged patina over decades of use. While traditionally used for heating, these ornate baskets are now frequently repurposed as rustic decorative log holders or unique industrial-style storage bins in modern home decor.
